Maintaining optimal vitamin D levels is critical for health and performance – affecting dopamine and serotonin levels, immune function, cardiovascular health, and more. But too much can be a bad thing too, which is why accurate testing to individualize your supplement dose is key.

If you’ve read our article on men’s health blood biomarker and testosterone testing, you’ll know that we’re firm believers that the best way to optimize your performance is with regular bloodwork.

There’s simply no other way to put it – if you’re not measuring the things that you’re trying to improve then you have no way of knowing whether or not your strategy is actually working.

This is especially important for vitamin D which is one of the most important factors of overall health and wellbeing, affecting a wide variety of biological functions including:

  • Immune function
  • Cardiovascular health
  • Depression, anxiety, and energy levels (through upregulating dopamine and serotonin)
  • Skeletal bone health
  • And many more…

If you’ve read our article on Dr. Peter Attia’s recommended supplements you’ll know that just like for everything else, Peter doesn’t prescribe a one-size-fits-all approach to Vitamin D supplementation. Instead he believes in regular blood testing to discern where your levels are at.

On his recent episode of the Joe Rogan Podcast he cites optimal blood ranges for vitamin D as 40-60ng/ml.

He explains that to target this optimal range requires two blood tests – one initial baseline test to determine where you are currently, and another one after a period of time supplementing to understand the effect of the supplementation.

We’re firm believers in that strategy as well, but the only issue is that sometimes getting a full blood panel done can be pricey.

And that’s why when one of our favorite new testing companies Everlywell released their new at-home vitamin D test kit, our ears perked up.

This kit is priced at only $31.85 at the time of this writing and uses a simple finger-prick blood sample to accurately test your levels of vitamin D.

Like with all of Everlywell’s other test kits (you can read our review of their food sensitivity package here) they include an easy-to-use kit that includes everything you need for sample collection.

This particular package requires a finger prick blood sample and they include everything you need for collection, along with pre-paid return shipping and packaging.

Once your samples get back to them they work with CLIA certified labs which have to meet high standards to obtain both state and federal certifications and submit themselves to regular inspections.

The tests are physician reviewed and approved by an independent board-certified physician within your state.

And what’s more, Everlywell is HIPAA compliant with secure data practices, using state of the art encryption to ensure your privacy.

Like we said earlier, the only way to really know what’s going on inside your body is to test. Otherwise you’re just guessing and hoping for the best.

And now, thanks to Everlywell’s vitamin D test kit, we can get an affordable snapshot of our vitamin D levels from the comfort of our homes.

You can learn more about Everlywell’s metabolism test kit and purchase your own through this link.

Once you get your first results you’ll have that starting number as a baseline. As we mentioned earlier Peter Attia recommends testing twice during this protocol in order to reach optimal levels.

From your baseline you can use our favorite vitamin D supplement, Thorne Research Vitamin D-5000, to work up over time. Typically we’ll see people using 5000iu/day for a month and then re-testing to assess where that has gotten them.

If you see that your levels after the second test are in range, then we typically drop down to 2,000iu/day with they’re D-1000 version in order to maintain. This will vary from person to person however so we typically re-test at least once every six months to make sure the levels stay within range.

Probably no other type of supplement elicits as much interest (or argument) from the biohacker community as nootropics. These compounds are meant to boost your brain’s cognitive function, increasing memory, focus, energy, and drive – similar to the effects of Adderall or Vyvanse but without the prescription.
The problem? Most of the nootropics on the market today are little more than caffeine pills masked with flashy marketing. Lucky for you we’ve compiled our top 3 favorite over-the-counter nootropic supplements here, along with our guide to using them effectively.
